Check your Fridge

May 19th, 2008 Posted in house and home, information

When a team of food-safety experts recently measured the temperature of various sections of 200 home refrigerators, the result were chilling. In many of the fridges, temperature rose above the danger zone (40 degrees) for more than a risky two hours a day. In fact, after two hours at 40 degrees, bacteria can reach levels that make you sick.

To keep your family safe, place a thermometer in the middle shelf of your fridge and check it three to four times a day for a few days. If the temperature rises above 40 degrees, lower your unit’s thermostat. Also, store highly perishable items like meat and milk on the coldest shelf. Use door compartments only for items that don’t spoil readily, such as salad dressing, pickles, and condiments. If your refrigerator has an egg holder on the door, put olives or mustard there; eggs belong on the coldest shelf.
